Barra Honda Caves

- Tour #

Barra Honda is unique among the National Parks of Costa Rica: its main attraction is an

intricately large

system of limestone caverns which house a multitude of capricious forms

and figures. Barra Honda is

a 450 m high, nearly flat mesa looming 300 m above the

Tempisque valley. It mainly consists of coral

reef aging over 60 million years. Tectonic

faulting has uplifted the area from the seabed 70 million years

ago and rains created

underground waterways. The constant dropping of rainwater on calcium

carbonate has

then created these underground art galleries - fancies of nature grown over millenniums

of years. Until now only 19 of the 42 caves have been surveyed. In this hike, you will visit

one of these

caves and see the flora and fauna of the place. This National Park is the

home for coatis, agutis,

anteaters, monkeys, different species of trees and medical

plants. This hike takes around one hour

approximately. This is a difficult hike and is

recommended only for people in good physical condition.

Nicaragua is a beautiful country and the largest country in Central America. Nicaragua’s proximity to

Costa Rica has encouraged reciprocal tourism between the countries. Our journey starts very early in

the morning to avoid lines at the border. After, we will stop for a delicious breakfast near the city of Rivas.

We will continue our way to Granada city, one of the first cities in America founded by Europeans. It has

a rich colonial heritage, seen in its architecture and layout. At Granada, we will visit the most important

monuments riding on a romantic horse-cart called Volanta, like Spanish used to do over 200 years ago.

We will see the main church known as the “Catedral”, also the “The Plaza de España” which is one of

the best view points of the magnificent Nicaragua Lake and other places of interest. We will have lunch

at a nice restaurant with a historical view. Our trip will then continue towards Masaya City, a very typical

Nicaraguan town, we will visit the active Masaya Volcano and the National park, a natural attraction that

we cannot miss on our trip. Our last stop in Masaya is at the local market where you will have time to

admire the local pottery and buy some souvenirs. We get back to Costa Rica and drop you off at your

hotel on the evening.

Palo Verde National Park and Guaitil Pottery

Palo Verde National Park has a uniquely dichotomous character. It’s simultaneously a spectacular

wetlands and one of the best examples of tropical dry forests remaining anywhere in the world. This

dual nature is a result of the Río Tempisque flooding over land located in a relatively arid climate

region. It is an exceptional place for birdwatchers and nature lovers in general. A two hour boat trip will

introduce us into this important ecosystem which shelters numerous crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas and

more wildlife than you

ever imagined. After this great opportunity to see wildlife, we will visit the town

of Guaitil located on the Nicoya Peninsula. For over 800 years, hand-thrown pottery has been an artistic

tradition handed down from generation to generation originating from the indigenous Chorotega Indians

who lived in western Costa Rica before the Spanish came to settle in the country. This community is

dedicated to preserve the Chorotega culture by making pottery using the same methods and materials

as their ancestors. The villagers earn most of their income from the pottery they sell to tourists and area

hotels.

Rincon de la Vieja Guided Hike

Costa Rica’s most diverse ecological parks. Known for its stunning diversity of flora and fauna, this

national park is home to two volcanoes, the Rincon de la Vieja and the Santa Maria, as well as six

different volcanic peaks, and thirty two rivers and streams. Boasting fantastic sceneries, beautiful

Turtle Nesting Tour at Night

Every night from November to January, one of the most amazing natural history tours in Costa Rica is

available on the Guanacaste coast. This unforgettable adventure allows you to witness the nesting ritual

of one of the largest reptiles on Earth: the Leatherback Sea Turtle. These massive turtles drag

themselves up onto the beach to lay their eggs at the same nesting site they have used for countless

generations. Turtles begin to dig a hole in the sand to lay between 65 to 90 eggs, then they will cover

the nest to protect it from predators; 60 days after, a baby turtle will emerge to become a new hope for

the leatherback turtle to survive. This is one of the most incredible phenomenons of mother’s nature.

Don’t miss it! For reservation minimum two days before, passport number recurred for it.

Do not use cameras with flashes or flashlights, do not approach the turtles and do not walk

on the dry sand that lies above the high tide markings.
