Costa Rican Hotels - Central Valley Region
CENTRAL VALLEY:
The main entryway to the country, the Central Valley offers a variety of
tourist, cultural and natural attractions, including Costa Rica's best
museums: the Gold, Jade, National, Costa Rican Art, La Salle Natural
Science, University of Costa Rica Insect and Children’s Contemporary Art
and Design Museums. In addition, this region is home to the architectural
jewel of Costa Rica: the National Theater. All of these are located in the
country’s capital.

The national parks located in the Valley—Poas, Braulio Carrillo, Irazu and
Turrialba— protect the region’s main volcanoes. All have road
infrastructure so that visitors can enjoy their birds, natural landscapes,
craters and forests.

The country’s capital, San Jose, is the seat of most government services;
however, the provincial capitals— Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago— offer a
variety of quality commercial and tourism services. As a tourism zone, the
Central Valley features two extraordinarily beautiful areas that in and of
themselves are true tourist destinations: Turrialba and Valle de los Santos.
The rural towns, for their part, are highly picturesque, and offer a glimpse of
old Costa Rica, with their houses of bahareque (a building material similar
to adobe but made of cattle dung and straw), large coffee plantations,
sugar mills and dairies.
Alajuela / Poas Volcano
Alajuela is an attractive place resonating with a warm and welcoming vibe.
Its mango-tree-lined center is as relaxed as any you’ll find in the provinces,
and the soaring whitewashed cathedral is a testament to the city’s past as
a colonial administrative center for nearby coffee plantations. Alajuela is
also clean, modern and full of hard-working urbanites, who take their jobs
almost as seriously as their football.

Alajuela stretches from the Central Mountain Range to the fertile northern
plains, presenting a remarkable diversity of stunning landscapes, with two
of the most popular active volcanoes in the country, Poas and Arenal. The
main crater of Poas, a mile in diameter, displays fumeraol and geyser
activity that has earned it the distinction of the largest geyser in the world.

The artisan center of Sarchi is home to Costa Rica's famous hand-painted
oxcarts.

So, take a stroll, eat some ice cream and grab a beer if the local football
team Liga Alajuelense is playing (especially if it’s against its arch-rival
Saprissa!).
San Jose:
San Jose is the hub of the country, located in the Central Valley,
surrounded by towering green mountains, the capital city is vibrant and not
as intimidating as most Central American capitals. Several downtown
parks provide tranquil green oasises amid the stresses of city life. Nightlife
is vibrant and international restaurants are plentiful. Various museums,
including the 100 year-old National Theater and the National Dance and
Theater Companies make San Jose the cultural capital as well.
Irazu Volcano / Turrialba:
Turrialba is a charming little town in the lush and beautiful Central Valley in
A quiet town, Turrialba with its charming street corners and gorgeous
surrounding sceneries is among the few places in Costa Rica with direct
access to a volcano’s crater. From the summit of the volcano, you can on a
clear day, see the Irazu, Poas and Barva volcanoes in the distance. Among
the most rarely visited national parks in Costa Rica, the Turrialba Volcano
National Park is home of the active Turrialba Volcano, whose last major
eruption occurred in 1866. The volcano itself is only 15 km northwest of
town. However, it is safe to climb, and though the facilities at the park are
rather meager, it is still a worthwhile trip.

If you thrive on adventure and the rush adrenaline to your head, try river
rafting along the Rios Pacuare and Reventazón that flow nearby town.
These two rivers are famous throughout the world and are sometimes
used as training grounds for world-class white water rafters and kayakers.

Nearby Turrialba is the Guayabo National Monument, which is a wonderful
place to explore. Costa Rica’s only pre-Columbian site that is open to
public access, these ruins provide a fantastic insight into what life circa
1000 BC to 1400AD must have been like.

Aside from the things to do around town, Turrialba is also famous for
baseball. This is because Rawlings baseballs that are used in Major
League games are manufactured in this tiny town.
San Gerardo de Dota:
The Wonderful town of San Gerardo de Dota lies in one of the most
beautiful regions of Costa Rica, on the rim of the Central Valley in the San
Jose Province. Located just 85 km southwest of the capital city San Jose,
this picturesque town lies near the Inter-American Highway on the western
slopes of the Cerro de La Muerte. An amazingly stunning habitat for a
plethora of bird and flora species, this region is most well known for being
the primary habitat for the resplendent Quetzal, Costa Rica’s most famous
bird.
